Slope Standards: Ideal (1:12) for permanent accessibility | Practical (1:5) for temporary use
Use these rules of thumb to quickly make the right choice.
Threshold up to 15 cm
A ramp of 1.5–2 metres is sufficient. MIOR ROLL or FOLD.
Threshold 15–30 cm
Choose a ramp of 2–3.5 metres. MIOR ROLL is ideal due to its flexibility.
Height difference above 30 cm
You need a ramp of 3.5+ metres. Consider MIOR ROLL (up to 6 metres) or a CUSTOM solution.
Use in a vehicle
MIOR DRIVE is specifically designed for permanent vehicle mounting with gas strut support.
💡 The 1:12 guideline: for every centimetre of height, you need 12 centimetres of length. This is the standard accessibility norm.
The ramp length you need depends on two factors: the total height to be bridged, and the desired slope. The commonly referenced 1:12 ratio means 12 cm of ramp for every 1 cm of height. For a 6-inch (15 cm) step, that is a minimum of 180 cm (approximately 6 ft). For two steps at a combined height of 30 cm, that is a minimum of 360 cm (approximately 12 ft).
Measure the combined height of all steps or thresholds — from the lower floor level to the top surface of the highest step. Always use the total height, not the height per individual step.
The 1:12 ratio is the commonly referenced guideline for comfortable ramp access. For power wheelchairs and heavy scooters, a gentler slope (1:15 or 1:20) is more comfortable. For lightweight temporary use, 1:8 is a practical option in some situations.
Measure the floor space available in front of the steps. If the required ramp length exceeds available space, a custom or platform solution may be needed. Contact MIOR for a tailored recommendation.
Enter your height difference in the calculator above. You will immediately receive the recommended ramp length (1:12), the practical length (1:5), and a product recommendation with pricing.
| Hoogte | Ideaal (1:12) | Praktisch (1:5) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 in / 10 cm (1 low step) | 48 in / 120 cm | 20 in / 50 cm |
| 7 in / 18 cm (1 standard step) | 84 in / 216 cm | 35 in / 90 cm |
| 14 in / 36 cm (2 steps) | 168 in / 432 cm | 71 in / 180 cm |
| 21 in / 54 cm (3 steps) | 252 in / 648 cm | 106 in / 270 cm |
| 28 in / 72 cm (4 steps) | 336 in / 864 cm | 141 in / 360 cm |
Ideal length = 1:12 ratio (recommended for most situations). Practical length = 1:5 (temporary, lightweight use only). When in doubt, longer is always more comfortable and safer.
Multiply the total height in centimetres by 12 for the recommended length using the 1:12 guideline. For a 20 cm (8 in) height: 20 × 12 = 240 cm (approximately 8 ft) minimum ramp length. Use the MIOR calculator above for an instant result including product recommendation and pricing.
The ADA references a maximum slope of 1:12 for accessible ramps in many settings — meaning 12 inches of ramp length for every 1 inch of rise. This is a planning guideline commonly used for residential and commercial ramp planning. The MIOR calculator shows both the 1:12 recommended length and the 1:5 practical length for your specific height.
Yes. The MIOR calculator works for all usage types: manual wheelchair, power wheelchair, mobility scooter, walker and vehicle mounting. Select the appropriate usage type in the calculator for a specific recommendation.
At height differences above 30 cm, the required ramp length at 1:12 quickly exceeds the available landing space for most residential entries. In that case, the MIOR calculator will flag the situation and we recommend contacting us for a custom or platform-based solution.
